IS ADDICTION A DISEASE THAT NEEDS TO BE TREATED MEDICALLY, OR IS IT A MORAL ISSUE? My answer is yes! All the efforts to fight the drug epidemic are needed, including:
(1) Interception of illegal drugs coming into our country; treating it medically as a disease;
(2) finding an alternative legal use of a drug to fight addiction craving. But there is another major answer to the drug problem that is unfortunately overlooked.
(3) The last and best line of defense against addiction is the user and abuser. Dry up the market and the seller has no customers. Too simplistic? Unrealistic? Yes, in the total scheme of things, drugs and addiction is never going away.
However, it’s time to look at the drug epidemic another way. That way is in giving the user a better, higher, more common-sense choice, which is Total Freedom from all drugs and alcohol. Multitudes are making this moral choice by viewing their bodies as a temple instead of a trash can. God did not create us to be a receptacle for pills, poison, and taking a lifetime of painkillers.
For many, addiction gives way to being sober, having sanity, and salvation. Every day on Facebook, I see individuals of all ages smiling, holding up a sign
that says “Sober” and a time frame connected to it denoting this person has been sober for X number of weeks, months, years, or even decades. How is it happening? Was it by sheer Willpower, a 12-step program, a faith encounter at a church, or a faith-based rehab program like Teen Challenge and similar Bible-based, Christ-centered programs?
R.F. Kennedy, Jr., the new head of Health & Human Services, said addiction can never be solved “without spiritual realignment.” He ought to know. He was a heroin addict for many years. He credits God and the 12-Steps enabling him to be drug-free.
For these sober, one’s drug addiction stops at the last place for which drugs and alcohol is intended---the body of the user. It's time for drug users to take responsibility for drug/alcohol addiction by using all means available so that addiction is G.O.N.E.
By breaking down addiction to the last ‘Source’ of the user makes sense. I put the word “Source” in capital letters, but the Source has a name. It’s some mother or father’s son or daughter, some man or woman’s spouse, some grandparent’s grandson or granddaughter, someone’s sibling or friend. Let’s remember when Law Enforcement is trying to protect our border; it’s for the above-mentioned family members they are trying to stop the flow of drugs into our country. When the drug cartel is successful in getting drugs across our borders, where and with who do you think it's intended? It’s the user and abuser, some mother’s grown-up child. Our most natural resources are our nation's human treasures.
If we lose sight of what is the ultimate market for drugs---our youth and addicted adults---we will never solve the nation's drug problem. Addiction is a human problem, a family problem, a making bad choices problem. Stop addiction at its last intended use---the user and abuser addict.
You say that’s been tried before and doesn’t work. That’s because the abstinence message has not been seriously promoted. I received the following on my Facebook page:
ONCE AN ADDICT, ALWAYS AN ADDICT?
IT’S A LIE. WE DO RECOVER!
We need to use every available means to prevent the drug's intended market from reaching its intended goal by offering an alternative to addiction.
Let’s call the alternative labeled G.O.N.E.---God Offers New Evidence.
I’m often asked if I believe addiction is a disease. To me, it’s a mute question because disease or not, it is curable. The disease model is pushed as an answer to addiction when, in fact, it perpetuates addiction. The drug cartel and the pharmaceutical industry are unintended partners.
