“Jesus’ name” is not a mantra or magic wand to be waved over an alcoholic or drug addict’s addiction. I do not take that name in vain. For over 60 years I’ve witnessed people who have recovered from various addictions and are permanently cured. This is not a myth. There is a lifetime cure available, producing incredible miracles of changed lives—changed for decades—from heroin, cocaine, opioid, alcohol, gambling, and even cigarette addiction. These people are all around us, no longer being disease carriers. Their addiction is not in remission but in submission to a Higher Power, and that power is available for those who ask for it “in Jesus’ name!”
A New York City narcotics detective, after hearing me talk about cured addicts, approached me saying, “No disrespect, Reverend! But I don’t believe it’s possible for a drug addict to get clean or cured, as you say.” Then he added, “Why don’t I ever see some of these cured drug addicts you’re talking about?”
I smiled. “No disrespect, but why would you ever see a drug addict who is not a user anymore? They don’t frequent the places now where you chase criminals. Come to church with me this Sunday and I’ll show you a whole group of Xers!”
It’s a tragedy that more people—especially addicts and their family members—do not know that the lie of permanent addiction is being refuted every single day. The proven cure is happening in hundreds of faith-based, Christ-centered discipleship-rehab programs as thousands of former alcoholics and drug addicts are being cured, healed, and set free by God’s power. Their addiction is gone and gone forever. These set-free ones have found that “God Offers New Evidence” against the lie of addiction.
